he Boulder
History Museum occupies the former summer home of Kate Harbeck,
a native New Yorker whose wealth benefited the four-legged residents of Boulder. Her love of animals was shared by
Martha Maxwell, a naturalist whose hunting outfit is part of the
collection at this museum. Also in the museum's impressive costume collection is a dress once owned by botanist
Hazel Schmoll, who studied the wildflowers and other plants of
Colorado.
Maxwell and Schmoll both loved the mountains around Boulder, and they fought to preserve Colorado's flora
and fauna through museum displays and research. It is fitting that they should be remembered in a museum dedicated
to preserving Boulder's stories.
