County's diverse terrain posed both challenges and opportunities to early farmers. The Lohr-McIntosh Farm was once
home to Minnie McIntosh and her family. Although farming in the
Longmont area was profitable, it required special adaptations at times. The fierce winds of this region could
flatten barns, and the aging barn closest to the farmhouse has survived only because of its innovative design.
Many old farmhouses still dot the highways of eastern Boulder County, such as
Edith Ewing's Centennial Farm. Located at 95th and Arapahoe Road,
this farm was owned and operated by the same family for more than one hundred years.
Just outside of Lyons, Sarah Walker was the only woman to own
a homestead in a high mountain valley now called Homestead Meadows. Her story, too, is one of adaptation and
perseverance.
