omen's athletics at the University of Colorado date from 1897, when female students organized their first basketball team. Prohibited from traveling, CU women competed against each other in intramural teams. In the 1940s, women swimmers held intercollegiate "telegraph meets", telegraphing their times to competing schools. Conditions improved when Title IX of the Educational Amendments mandated equal funding for women's collegiate sports in 1972. Since then, CU women have won titles in Big 12, Big Eight, and NCAA Division I competitions. They have set world records and won Olympic medals. A special exhibit on athletics at the CU Heritage Center tells some of their stories and commemorates their achievements. |
