riginally from Holland, Matilda Vanderpoel was an artist who painted pastel portraits, landscapes, and flowers. A teacher and exhibiting artist at the Chicago Art Institute, she was one of the "Bluebirds" (Chicago working women who vacationed each year in Boulder and Gold Hill). Two wall murals in the "Bluebird Cottage" at 1215 Baseline are credited to her. Vanderpoel fell in love with Gold Hill, and in 1923 she moved into a cabin named "Sunset View" with her brother and his wife. Affectionately called "Auntie Till" by the locals, she returned every summer for 20 years. After her death, her sister-in-law Marie continued to spend summers in Gold Hill for years. The Vanderpoel family still owns the home.
