ean Sherwood came to Boulder from Chicago to teach art at Chautauqua. She was struck by the town's scenic mountain backdrop, and in 1911 she built a retreat called the Bluebird Cottage for tired working women from Chicago. Ten-dollar life memberships entitled women to spend two weeks every summer at the cottage at 1215 Baseline. In 1921, at the age of 75, Sherwood bought and renovated a run-down hotel in Gold Hill and reopened it as the Bluebird Lodge. By 1934, more than five thousand "Bluebirds" had vacationed in Colorado. Many returned year after year for the physical and mental renewal offered by these spectacular surroundings. Sherwood founded the Boulder Arts Association in 1923 and the Boulder Artists' Guild in 1926, at the age of 80. |
