he Guises' only child, Mabel, was born in Gold Hill in 1885. She eventually moved to Boulder where she taught in the Highland School and married Ralph Montgomery, a grocer. When Mabel Guise Montgomery was 55, she wrote and published a short history of the mining town entitled A Story of Gold Hill, Colorado: Seventy-odd Years In the Heart of the Rockies.
As a child, Montgomery attended classes in the one-room frame schoolhouse erected in Gold Hill in 1895. The schoolhouse still stands today on what is believed to be the site of the original log schoolhouse where Hannah Guise taught when it opened in 1873. |
