prolific writer of both poetry and prose, Helen Hunt Jackson is best known for her books, A Century of Dishonor and Ramona, both of which attack the federal government's Indian policies. Of Boulder Canyon, Jackson wrote, "I hold the Bowlder [sic] people lucky not in that gold and silver are brought down to their streets every day, but that they can walk of an afternoon up into Bowlder Canyon." She compared the canyon to an allegro movement in a symphony. Like Isabella Bird, Helen Hunt Jackson traveled through Boulder County, her written impressions inspiring others to do the same. She moved to Colorado in 1873 to improve her respiratory health, making her permanent home in Colorado Springs. |
