ompleted in 1910, Nederland's Barker dam and reservoir are familiar landmarks. They are named after Hannah Barker, a wealthy Irish-born widow who owned the ranch upon which they were built. Barker's accomplishments rival those of the busiest modern-day women. She served as a bank director, president of the Boulder Fortnightly Club, founding member of the Women's Club of Boulder, and deaconess of her church. She contributed money to Chautauqua and the Boulder Public Library, donated land for a small park in Boulder (also named after her), and gave her time to many causes, including the temperance movement. Barker died at age 74 during the 1918 influenza epidemic. |
